A bonded warehouse holds imported goods with duty and import VAT suspended until they are released into the market — or re-exported, in which case the duty is never due.

This is not customs advice. Duty treatment depends on the commodity code, the origin, the regime and the authorisation held by the specific warehouse. Confirm anything here with a customs broker or the relevant authority before you act on it.

What bonded storage does not do

  • It does not reduce the duty. It defers it, or avoids it only if the goods leave again.
  • It does not exempt goods from safety, licensing or sanitary controls.
  • It does not let you sell from stock without first clearing what you sell.
  • It adds record-keeping obligations, and the warehouse keeper answers for them.
